“In truth, one step at a time is not too difficult.” Scroll III
I do love that quote, and I keep it at the front of my thoughts because I have tended, in my life, to think I needed to “know all the steps”, “know the outcomes”, “know where – how – why – etc.” of a project before I even TOOK that first step! I am learning to leave that notion behind! It’s hard sometimes – but then I just repeat the quote and breathe …
This week – “watch a movie” was one of our MKMMA assignments. I watched “Door to Door”, the story of Oregon D2D salesman, Bill Porter.
Living with cerebral palsy, Bill Porter refused to take the “easy” way – disability dollars. He had a goal – be a salesman, be independent. He had a positive mental attitude – and he let nothing discouraging defeat him. I watched him mentally step back, review every situation at hand, weigh his options and … then … forge ahead! Every time! Against big odds! (makes MY life look like a cake walk by comparison)
Bill Porter’s determination and attitude formed the foundation for his daily plan of action – his routine that gave structure to his job and to his dream. He did it himself and created the outcome HE wanted! He didn’t take anyone else’s word for what he could or couldn’t accomplish. He didn’t even take their word for what THEY could or couldn’t accomplish!
Did he do it alone? No. At first he relied on the support and assistance of his mother. Then, when she could no longer be HIS support – he became HERS, and chose his own supporters (or mastermind group as we call it) to help him reach his goals. I was so impressed with his ingenuity and the care he took in selecting and nurturing those in his circle.
Watching Bill Porter reach his goals by taking consistent, daily steps along the winding, twisting, changing road of his life is what quietly tweaked my perception of persistence this week! Look at 2 very different lives (his and mine). Look at 2 very different individuals. Yet look at their commonalities.
I have a goal – my DMP (definite major purpose) for my life. I have studied it – changed it – tailored it and intend to LIVE it. I have a positive mental attitude – although his was WAY more rock-solid than mine. Something to strive for! I have a plan of action – one which, with the help of the quote at the top of the post, will become ingrained, innate, and effortless (I hope.) AND, I have a mastermind! Actually I have more than one. I have a BIG one – all of my fellow travelers on the MKMMA journey. And I have a small one – a trio of colleagues who nudge each other each day to stay on track, stay the course and be all that we intend to be.
Getting a new perspective always improves the view! How can we lose?

That’s interesting, your comment about one step at a time. I like it, because I too, want to get very thing right the first time, and have all steps in place first. Must admit that’s still the case – but I had read it as one complete group of temps at a time. I’ll look at it from your perspective the next read and hopefully it will help me with my first step! Thanks Deb.
This was one of my favorite movies. I watch 3 of the 4 movies and saw the hero’s journey being played out in multiple character in each movie. What a wonderful exercise to illustrate
persistence. Great job in breaking the movie down and pointing out the 4 traits to success!
I too love this quote “In truth, one step at a time is not too difficult.” Scroll III Great post Deb! Loving all the reviews on Door to Door and am getting it to watch myself today!
Deb I love how you related the movie to each MKMMA point!! Yes I agree that our lives seem like such a cake walk each day compared to the trials and tribulations that we had to go through. I love being in a mastermind group with you and feel blessed to be able to have that!! Great post!!
I too loved this movie and was deeply inspired by his persistence.
